Monica Waterhouse is a Research Associate
at the University of Ottawa, where she recently completed her doctorate
in Society, Culture, and Literacies. She also teaches courses in second
language teaching approaches and critical perspectives on multilingual
and multicultural contexts as a part-time professor. Her research
interests lie at the intersections of language education, multiple
literacies, critical pedagogies, curriculum theory, and Deleuzian
geophilosophy. Both nationally and internationally, she presents annually
at conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed, open access journals
such as Educational Insights, Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, and
Transnational Curriculum Inquiry.
Monica’s SSHRC-funded dissertation
work focused on experiences of multiple literacies – reading,
reading world, reading self, reading peace and violence – in
connection with the life experiences of adult learners enrolled in
the federal government’s Language Instruction for Newcomers
to Canada (LINC) program. Her research continues to examine language
learning and teaching as inherently affective, transformative events.
